Men may experience a dip in self-esteem if their romantic partner succeeds, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Florida.

Researchers collected data from 32 couples made up of university students. Both partners in the relationship underwent a series of problem solving tests, and then researchers told each participant their partner had placed in the top 12 percent of all participants.

They found that men who believed their partners had been more successful in the tests repeatedly displayed lower self-esteem in a survey.

"It makes sense that a man might feel threatened if his girlfriend outperforms him in something they are doing together, such as trying to lose weight. But this research found evidence that men automatically interpret a partner's success as their own failure, even when they are not in direct competition," the researchers wrote.
