New Philips Store Lighting Can Track Shoppers

Philips trackingsystem 022014

European electronic giant Philips has developed a tracking system based on an innovative idea - in-store lights that track shoppers as they move around the store, reports said. While we have heard about Apple's iBeacon that sends messages to shoppers through Bluetooth when they reach a particular part of the store, the Philips system is based on the store's lighting.

Imagine, while moving around the supermarket, a smartphone app shows you a grid of the supermarket to let you know where you are and where you need to go. As you pass by a box of cereal, an app might alert you with an offer. You can even ask an app for suggestions for new products or recipes under this technology.

The lighting system essentially turns each overhead light into an identifiable marker on an invisible grid. In order to get these alerts, you have to choose to be tracked by Philips's new system.
