Adults With Mental Illness May Face 80 Percent Unemployment

Adults suffering from mental illness in the U.S. may face as high as 80 percent unemployment, according to a new study from the National Alliance on Mental illness. For the study the group reviewed both health and work records throughout the U.S. for the year of 2012.

They found that just 17.8 percent of people who reported suffering from mental illness also held consistent work. This marked a decline of nearly 23 percent since 2003:

"It isn't surprising," the researchers explained. "We knew that mental health services really took it on the chin during the recession. Employment rates had already been dismal to begin with, and when the supports were eroded, people with mental illness lost support and lost jobs."
