Kalman Mizsei Appointed Head Of EU Advisory Mission In Ukraine

Kalman Mizsei of Hungary has been appointed Head of Mission for the EU Advisory Mission for Civilian Security Sector Reform Ukraine (EUAM Ukraine), it was announced Thursday.

EUAM Ukraine, established by the Council on 22 July, will be an unarmed, non-executive civilian mission.

EU advisers will initially focus on supporting the elaboration of revised security strategies and the rapid implementation of reforms, in coordination and coherence with other EU efforts, as well as with the OSCE and other international partners.

Operational planning and other preparations for the mission are underway and a civilian response team is already in Kyiv.

The decision to appoint Kalman Mizsei as the chief of EUAM Ukraine was taken by EU's Political and Security Committee.

Kalman Mizsei has been Adjunct Professor at the Central European University since 2006, where he teaches courses on Globalization and Global Governance and East European economic and political transition after 1989.

During this period, he also worked as EU Special Representative for the Republic of Moldova (2007-2011) and, for the Open Society Institute, as Co-Chairman of the Roma Policy Board and Chairman of the Board for Making the Most of EU Funds for Roma Inclusion.

Previously, from 2001-2006, Mizsei was at the level of Assistant Secretary-General at the UN, directing the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS, working with the 31 program countries, and managing nearly 2,000 staff.
