FDA Approves Over-The-Counter Flonase Allergy Relief

The FDA has approved an over-the-counter formulation of the drug Flonase aimed specifically at allergy relief. The drug, produced by GlaxoSmithKline, will be the second major nasal steroid approved for over the counter sales by the FDA.

The first such drug approved by the agency was Nasacort 24Hr and both drugs are approved for symptoms including nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing and itchiness. Flonase Allergy Relief will also provide relief for symptoms including itchy eyes and watery eye, according to GlaxoSmithKline.

The primary active ingredient in the drug will be fluticasone propionate, which is a steroid first approved by the FDA in 1994. GlaxoSmithKline has confirmed that they drug will hit the over-the-counter marketplace in 2015.
