This year's Halloween will see more and more children in superhero and action hero costumes, according to the National Retail Federation's 2016 Halloween Consumer Top Costumes Survey.
Princess costumes, which was in the top spot for the past 11 years, fell to the second place, the survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics revealed. Other costumes in the top five places were animal costumes, Batman characters and Star Wars characters.
Spending on Halloween costumes would reach $3.1 billion this year, with 67 percent of Halloween celebrants planning to purchase costumes.
It is expected that more than 3 million children will become their favorite action or superhero. Around 2.9 million will be princess, while 2.5 million will be dressed in animal costumes.
For the adults 18-34-Years group, a Batman Character, including Batman, Harley Quinn, The Joker, etc., are in the top spot, followed by Witch. For the 35 plus adults group, Witch costume is the favorite, followed by Pirates.
More than three million children will dress as their favorite action or superhero, 2.9 million will dress as their favorite princess and 2.5 million plan to dress as a cat, dog, bunny or other animal.
Among pet owners, 16 percent plan to dress their pets in costume this year. Pumpkin, hot dog and bumble bee are at the top of the list again this year.
The survey asked some 6,791 U.S. consumers about their Halloween costume plans between September 6 and 13.
