Sensex, Nifty End Higher For Third Day

Indian shares rose for a third straight session on Wednesday, although markets ended off their day's highs ahead of the Fed and ECB meetings.

The benchmark BSE Sensex ended the session higher by 46.64 points or 0.13 percent at 35,739.16, while the broader Nifty index rose by 13.85 points or 0.13 percent to close at 10,856.70.

Pharma stocks posted widespread gains, with Lupin, Cipla and Dr Reddy's Laboratories climbing 2-3 percent.

IT stocks also gained ground as the rupee hit a two-week low against the dollar on concerns over rising inflation and amid expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates by 25 basis points when it ends its two-day policy meeting later today.

TCS rallied 2.4 percent, Infosys added 1.3 percent, Wipro gained 0.9 percent and Tech Mahindra rose 0.7 percent.

Bharti Airtel fell 1.2 percent and Idea Cellular slumped as much as 5.8 percent after Reliance Jio said it would provide 1.5 GB per day additional 4G data to every pre-paid user.

Adani Ports, Bajaj Finance, Zee Entertainment Enterprises and Tata Steel dropped 1-2 percent.
