Trump: The Centrist Democratic Party Is Dead

Declaring the centrist Democratic Party dead in an op-ed published in USA Today on Wednesday, President Donald Trump described the new Democrats as radical socialists who want to model America's economy after Venezuela.

Trump claimed the U.S. will come dangerously closer to socialism if Democrats win control of Congress in the midterm elections next month.

The president specifically pointed to the "Medicare for All" proposals supported by many Democrats that would establish a government-run, single-payer health care system.

"In practice, the Democratic Party's so-called Medicare for All would really be Medicare for None," Trump wrote. "Under the Democrats' plan, today's Medicare would be forced to die."

Trump argued eliminating the current Medicare system and outlawing private and employer-based plans would inevitably lead to the massive rationing of healthcare.

A "Medicare for All" bill introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., last year has sixteen Democratic co-sponsors, while more than a hundred Democrats support similar legislation introduced in the House.

Trump said government-run healthcare would just be the beginning, accusing Democrats of also pushing for massive government control of education, private-sector businesses and other major sectors of the economy.

"Every single citizen will be harmed by such a radical shift in American culture and life," Trump wrote. "Virtually everywhere it has been tried, socialism has brought suffering, misery and decay."

The president also tied the "Medicare for All" proposals to immigration, claiming millions of illegal immigrants would come to the U.S. to take advantage of healthcare paid for by American taxpayers.

"Today's Democratic Party is for open-borders socialism. This radical agenda would destroy American prosperity," Trump wrote. "Under its vision, costs will spiral out of control. Taxes will skyrocket. And Democrats will seek to slash budgets for seniors' Medicare, Social Security and defense."

"I am committed to resolutely defending Medicare and Social Security from the radical socialist plans of the Democrats" he added. "For the sake of our country, our prosperity, our seniors and all Americans — this is a fight we must win."

The op-ed from Trump comes as many Democrats have been attacking Republicans on the issue of healthcare leading up to the midterm elections.
