Lionsgate TV and Common's Freedom Road Productions are planning to adapt Zora Neale Hurston's book, Barracoon: The Story of the Last 'Black Cargo' as a limited television series.

Barracoon: The Story of the Last 'Black Cargo' is a non-fiction work by Hurston based on her interviews in 1927 with Cudjo Lewis, the last living survivor of the Middle Passage. The book failed to find a publisher at the time and remained unpublished until the 21st century. The full book was published in 2018 and received critical acclaim.

"It's official! I'm so excited for this project. Zora Neale Hurston is a national treasure and I'm grateful to develop one of her stories into a show!" Common tweeted.

Barracoon is the second project between Lionsgate and Freedom Road. Lionsgate and Freedom Road are already developing the Saturday Night Knife and Gun Club TV adaptation starring and produced by Common.

Hurston also is the author of the American classic Their Eyes Were Watching God.
