Opera Launches Web 3-ready Browser For Android, With Crypto Wallet

Web browser maker Opera Software AS launched its Web 3-ready browser for Android devices, with built-in mobile crypto wallet and support for Ethereum and decentralized apps (Dapps). The launch was announced at the Hard Fork Decentralized blockchain event at London.

Web 3 is an umbrella term for a set of emerging technologies intersecting cryptocurrencies, blockchains and distributed systems, which together is the internet of the future.

Opera Software claims more than two billion people who use Android can now get a Web 3 experience through the Opera browser. However, as a prerequisite, they need to buy some Ethereum cryptocurrency and keep in their Opera Crypto Wallet to start making Web 3 transactions.

The Opera Browser's support for the Ethereum protocol will allow users to make transactions and developers to create Dapps. Ethereum has the largest community of developers building Dapps.

Opera for Android will access the Ethereum blockchain through Infura, an infrastructure platform.

The company also plans to make its PC browser for Windows, Mac and Linux Web 3 ready in 2019.

In August, Opera had launched its web browser for desktop computers with a built-in mobile crypto wallet access after the positive response received to the crypto wallet in Opera for Android it launched earlier.

Opera became the first major browser to carry a built-in crypto wallet, which spared Internet users the trouble of installing separate Dapp browsers or crypto wallet extensions. The private beta version of the Opera browser for Android was made available in early July.

The Norwegian company plans to roll out several updates to the crypto wallet program across its mobile and PC browsers.

The crypto wallet in Opera for Android is a user-controlled wallet, which means that the keys controlling the funds and assets are stored on the user's phone only.

In November 2018, Opera had announced a partnership with the leading strategic blockchain advisory and financial services firm, Ledger Capital, to work on the potential of the blockchain ecosystem.
