Australia Unemployment Rate Falls To 5.0% In December

The unemployment rate in Australia came in at a seasonally adjusted 5.0 percent in December, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.

That was below expectations for 5.1 percent, which would have been unchanged from the November reading.

The Australian economy added 21,600 jobs last month - beating forecasts for the addition of 18,000 following the 37,000 jump in the previous month.

The participation rate came in at 65.6, shy of forecasts for 65.7, which would have been unchanged.
