South Korea Industrial Output Falls 1.4% In December

Industrial production in South Korea dropped a seasonally adjusted 1.4 percent on month in December, Statistics Korea said on Thursday - following the 1.6 percent monthly decline in November.

On a yearly basis, industrial production climbed 1.6 percent - accelerating from 1.1 percent in the previous month.

For the fourth quarter of 2018, industrial production slid 0.8 percent on quarter and gained 4.7 percent on year.

The index of all industry production was down 0.6 percent on month and up 0.3 percent on year in December; for the fourth quarter, the index dipped 0.3 percent on quarter and added 2.6 percent on year.

The Manufacturing Production Index in December shed 1.8 percent on month but gained 2.0 percent on year. The Manufacturing Shipment Index fell 1.6 percent on month but added 0.8 percent on year. The Manufacturing Inventory Index climbed 2.2 percent on month and 7.3 percent on year.

The Production Capacity Index dipped 0.3 percent on month and 1.3 percent on year. The Index of Capacity Utilization Rate lost 0.6 percent on month but increased 4.0 percent on year.

The Manufacturing Average Capacity Utilization Rate was 72.7 percent, down 0.4 percentage points on month. The Index of Services shed 0.3 percent on month but gained 0.8 percent on year. The Retail Sales Index rose 0.8 percent on month and 3.0 percent on year.

The Equipment Investment Index slid 0.4 percent on month and 14.5 percent on year. The Domestic Machinery Shipment Index lost 5.0 percent on year. The value of Domestic Machinery Orders Received climbed 14.2 percent on year.

In December, the value of Construction Completed at constant prices increased 2.4 percent on month but fell 9.5 percent on year. The value of Construction Orders Received at current prices dropped 7.0 percent on year.

The Composite Coincident Index rose 0.1 percent on month. The Cyclical Component of Composite Coincident Index, which reflects current economic situations, fell 0.2 points on month.

The Composite Leading Index added 0.1 percent on month. The Cyclical Component of Composite Leading Index, which predicts the turning point in business cycle, eased 0.2 points on month.
