South Korea Jobless Rate Rises For Second Month

South Korea's unemployment rate increased for a second straight month in April to its highest level in three months, defying expectations, figures from Statistics Korea showed on Wednesday.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate grew to 4.1 percent in April from 3.8 percent in March. Economists had expected the rate to remain unchanged.

The latest rate was the highest since the 4.4 percent logged in January.

In April, employment grew by 171,000 versus a 250,000 increase in March.

The non-adjusted unemployment rate also climbed in April, to 4.4 percent from 4.3 percent.

The youth unemployment rate rose to 11.5 percent in April from 10.8 percent in March.
