A park in Detroit has been renamed in honor of the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.

The Chene Park replaced its name sign with the new Aretha Franklin signage, on Thursday, May 9, 2019, in Detroit.

Mayor Mike Duggan had told mourners at Franklin's funeral in last August that the name would be changed to Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre. "When Aretha Franklin sang, it sounded like the voice of Detroit," he said. Days later, City Council unanimously approved it.

The facility is known for its outdoor stage and summer concerts, and hosted a Franklin tribute show last summer. Franklin had performed at Chene Park in 2015 to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Franklin died on August 16, 2018 at 76.
