Patients suffering from year-round chronic runny nose due to allergies can find relief from a new cryotherapy procedure called Clarifix.

According to ClariFix's website, the cryotherapy is a safe, clinically proven and minimally invasive treatment that targets the source of symptoms for lasting relief.

The procedure targets and freezes the nerves in the nose, which reduces runny, stuffy nose symptoms. A topical numbing medication is used before the procedure. The most common side effects associated with the treatment is temporary congestion or pain. The ClariFix device and an endoscope are placed into the back of your nose, where the out-of-balance nerves are located. The cold therapy is applied using a cooling probe.

Gregory Levitin, M.D., of New York Eye and Ear Infirmary at Mount Sinai, told CBS New York, "Patients shouldn't feel any pain, and it's very effective in almost everyone we treat."

However, ClariFix is just a symptom-management procedure. It doesn't treat your allergies but just alleviates symptoms caused by those allergies. After the treatment, "there is minimal downtime and recovery," according to ClariFix's website. "Most patients begin to see improvement between 2 and 6 weeks post treatment."
