Trump: "Iran Made A Very Big Mistake" Shooting Down U.S. Drone

U.S. President Donald Trump has blasted Iran after the country shot down a U.S. military drone. Oil prices jumped 6% following the news.

"Iran made a very big mistake!" Trump tweeted on Thursday morning.

Hours earlier, US officials said an Iranian surface-to-air missile shot down the unmanned military surveillance drone over the Strait of Hormuz, international airspace.

Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it shot down an "intruding American spy drone" after it entered into the country's territory.

"Iranian reports that the aircraft was over Iran are false," the U.S. Central Command said in a statement. "This was an unprovoked attack on a U.S. surveillance asset in international airspace."

According to CNBC, US West Texas Intermediate crude rose $3.24, or 6.03%, to $57 a barrel. Brent crude, the global benchmark, was up $2.81 or 4.5% to $64.63 a barrel.

Meanwhile, reports say the White House is holding a meeting this morning to discuss how respond to Iran's shooting down of the drone.

The drone shot down by Iran was an RQ-4A Global Hawk, US Central Command said in a statement Thursday. The Global Hawk has amassed more than 250,000 flight hours and has flown in support of US missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, North Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, said the US national security contractor Northrop Grumman.
