The company's Q2 net loss narrowed to $100.9 million or $0.67 per share from $103.5 million or $0.71 per share loss incurred last year.

On a non-GAAP basis, net income was $46.6 million or $0.30 per share compared to $11.7 million or $0.08 per share earned a year ago.

Total revenues increased to $516.6 million from $388.3 million generated in the same period of last year.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of $0.12 per share on revenue of $488.35 million for the quarter. Analysts' estimate typically exclude certain special items.

"With year-over-year revenue growth of 80% and ARR now over $300 million, the strength of our cloud business is driving a faster transition to a renewable software model," said Jason Child, CFO, Splunk. "By the end of the year, we expect that virtually all new software sales will be cloud or term license-based."

Q3, FY20 Outlook

The company projects Q3 total revenues to be about $600 million, non-GAAP operating margin to be about 16%. Thirty-two Wall Street analysts have a consensus revenue estimate of $590.52 million for the third quarter.

Further, the company revised up its fiscal 2020 revenue guidance to about $2.30 billion from the prior guidance of about $2.25 billion. Analysts are looking for revenues of $2.26 billion for fiscal 2020.

Q3 Results

GAAP net income for the third quarter of fiscal 2019 was $99.9 million or $0.65 per share compared to $79.4 million or $0.52 per share for the third quarter of fiscal 2018.

Non-GAAP net income was $182.5 million or $1.18 per share compared to $145.6 million or $0.95 per share last year.

Revenue was $853.0 million, an increase of 9.4%, compared to $779.7 million for the third quarter of fiscal year 2018.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of $1.10 per share on revenue of $831.02 million for the quarter. Analysts' estimate typically exclude certain special items.

For the fourth quarter...

The company expects revenue to be in the range of $830 million - $860 million, GAAP EPS of $0.69 - $0.82, and non-GAAP EPS of $1.10 - $1.15. Eight Wall Street analysts have a consensus earnings estimate of $1.01 per share on revenue of $838.45 million for the quarter.

For fiscal 2019...

The company sees revenue in the range of $3.34 billion - $3.37 billion, GAAP EPS of $3.11 - $3.24, and non-GAAP EPS of $4.52 - $4.57. Analysts look for earnings of $4.35 per share and revenue of $3.33 billion for fiscal 2019.
