R. Kelly Asks To Be Let Out Of Solitary Confinement

Lawyers for R. Kelly have requested the controversial singer be released from solitary confinement.

The lawyers argued that the Federal Bureau of Prisons are treating the R&B star with "cruel and unusual punishment" in part because of his celebrity status.

They asked a judge to allow Kelly to join the general population, saying the most restrictive floor in Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center is "where inmates go to be punished."

Meanwhile, prison officials pointed to Kelly's "alleged offense and notoriety" as a reason to keep him in the Special Housing Unit, according to a motion filed by attorney Steve Greenberg.

Federal prosecutors denied Kelly is being held in solitary confinement, noting in court filings he has had a cellmate for "quite some time."

"In fact, he has had more than one cellmate so far," the prosecutors wrote. "In any event, these are not reasons to disrupt the Court's prior ruling to detain defendant."

Kelly has been charged with 13 counts related to sex crimes, some involving minors. He has pleaded not guilty.
