Missouri Receives Over 2,100 Medical Marijuana Business License Applications

Missouri has received more than 2,100 medical marijuana industry applications for the state's 348 licenses.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services or DHSS said that as of August 19, it has received 2,163 medical marijuana facility applications.

Of this, 1,163 applications are for dispensary operations, while 554 applications are for cultivation facilities. The agency also received 415 applications for manufacturing operations and 17 applications for testing facilities.

The DHSS said it will release more information about the applications received, such as applicant names and facility locations, in the coming weeks.

The agency added it greatly appreciated the support exemplified by the "exceptionally large number of applicants" that will provide medical marijuana to qualified patients and raise funds to serve veterans.

"However, this resulted in a large number of applications being received in a short window of time and we have determined that all of those who started an application as of 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, will be part of the overall pool to be reviewed for licensure," said Dr. Randall Williams, director of DHSS.

Following the facility application deadline, the DHSS also received claims from some facility applicants that they experienced technical difficulties during the application process and were unable to submit their applications as a result.

Missouri plan to issue 192 dispensary licenses, 60 cultivation licenses, 86 manufacturing licenses and 10 testing laboratory licenses in the state.

Regulators must approve or deny dispensary applications by January 1, 2020. However, sales are not expected until March or April of next year.

Taxes on medical marijuana sold and money collected by the DHSS through fees, after covering the program's operating expenses, will be transferred to the new Missouri Veterans' Health and Care Fund.
