Rafael Nadal won his fourth U.S. Open title preventing a remarkable comeback by Daniil Medvedev in one of the longest finals in the tournament's history.

The Spaniard won his 19th career Grand Slam title in a grueling battle that lasted four hours and 50 minutes in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After losing the first two sets, Russian No. 5 seed Medvedev fought back to win the next two sets to extend the match to a five set. But Nadal ultimately proved too strong for the first-time Grand Slam finalist, ending Medvedev's 12-match winning streak. Score: 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4.

Nadal was off-color at the start of the match against the 6-foot-6-inch Russian, who is 10 years younger to the 33 year old champion.

"It's very tough to play against you," Medvedev told Nadal during the trophy presentation ceremony.
"It has been an amazing final," Nadal said, and added that he had "more or less, the match under control."

He is just one win away from equaling Roger Federer's record of 20 Grand Slam singles titles.

This is the second time in three years that Nadal is completing the French Open-US Open double.

Medvedev conceded defeat after posing Nadal one of the toughest challenges of his 27 career Grand Slam finals.

On Saturday, 19 year-old Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open era. She defeated 23-time major champion Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 with a dominant performance over her American rival in the women's singles final.

Bianca, whose Romanian parents migrated to Canada, was not even born when Serena won her first US Open title. She is the first player born in this millennium to win a major singles title.

She kept troubling a player double her age with precise, aggressive hitting off the ground, and dominated rallies with her forehand.

Having never been past the second round of a Slam before, Bianca's victory will elevate her to No.5 in the WTA rankings on Monday.
