No.8 seed Serena Williams' dreams of a 24th Grand Slam singles title was shattered in the third round of Australian Open by China's 27th seed Wang Qiang.

The 29-year-old player beat Williams 6-4 6-7(2) 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena Friday, avenging her quarter final loss to the American super star at the U.S. Open four months ago.

Failing to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set forced Wang to play a tough third set.

"You know after last time I do really hard work on court and off the court so I think it's really good work, yes, I believe I can do it," she said after the match.

The biggest upset of the tournament followed later in the day, when American teenage sensation Coco Gauff beat defending champion Naomi Osaka in straight sets to reach the fourth round.

The Japanese player struggled with unforced errors throughout, which made things easier for 15-year-old Gauff and finish the match 6-3 6-4 in just 67 minutes.

In the men's section, defending champion Novak Djokovic was in unstoppable form, and eased past Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3 6-2 6-2 in the third round.

But it was an entirely different outing for Roger Federer in an epic third-round encounter on Friday.

The six-time Australian Open champion won the final six points of a fifth-set tiebreak to outclass Australian John Millman 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4 4-6 7-6[10-8].

The four-hour victory was the Swiss tennis maestro's 100th at the tournament.
