Willie Nelson's longtime drummer Paul English died at the age of 87 on Tuesday.

English, who has been suffering from pneumonia, reportedly died in the presence of his friends and family at a hospital near his home in Dallas.

Born in Vernon, Texas, English joined Nelson's band, nicknamed the Family, in 1966 and played with him up until his death.

English was immortalized in Nelson's 1971 autobiographical road song "Me & Paul," featured on Yesterday's Wine.

Known for his flamboyant, devilish style and wearing a black satin cape on stage, English earned a reputation for brandishing a firearm and engaging in off-stage scuffles.

In his autobiography, Nelson described English as "wild, street-smart Paul ... who always had my back and got me out of more scraps than I care to recall."
