The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced that it will distribute more than one million UEFA EURO 2020 tickets using Blockchain Technology directly to fans' mobile phones through the UEFA EURO 2020 mobile tickets app. This is expected to improve the fan experience across all 12 host venues and 51 matches.
UEFA EURO 2020 is officially seen as the most in-demand and the biggest EURO ever as already a total of 28.3 million ticket requests have been received from fans spanning 200 countries. The mobile ticket solution will greatly assist ticket distribution across the world as well as speedy entry into stadiums.
The mobile ticket solution will also help reduce the number of paper tickets compared with previous tournaments.
The ticketing system, launched by UEFA in August 2018, will make the ticket sales process for matches more simple and safe as well as help prevent duplication of tickets, with QR codes only being activated by Bluetooth once fans are in close proximity to the stadium.
A blockchain-based distribution system combined with mobile Bluetooth devices is used at the stadium entrances to deliver a QR code to the mobile for scanning at the entry gates. Fans can also easily transfer their tickets to their guests using the app's transfer function, which will facilitate their entry into the stadium.
Fans who purchased UEFA EURO 2020 tickets earlier will also receive their tickets as mobile tickets via the UEFA EURO 2020 mobile tickets app, which will be available for download towards the end of May 2020 for Android and iOS phones. Mobile tickets will be delivered to the app no later than seven days before the match.
The UEFA EURO 2020 mobile ticket project builds upon the successful inaugural UEFA Nations League finals in June 2019 for which over 110,000 tickets or 80 percent of the tickets available were successfully delivered to mobile phones for the four matches.
The system was fully deployed as a trial by UEFA as they distributed 100% of the match tickets for the UEFA Super Cup match between Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid in Tallinn in August 2018.
