Primus To Perform Rush's 'A Farewell To Kings' In Full On Upcoming Tour

Primus is set to embark on cross-country tour paying tribute to prog-rock legends Rush, with the shows to feature the iconic A Farewell to Kings in its entirety.

"A little over one year ago, Ler LaLonde and I started kicking the idea around of Primus performing a series of shows featuring an iconic Rush album from our youth," Primus frontman Les Claypool said in a Facebook post.

He added, "Being that A Farewell to Kings was the first Rush record I ever heard, and that it contains my all-time favorite Rush tune, Cygnus X1, the choice narrowed quickly."

Claypool and his Primus bandmates Larry LaLonde and Tim Alexander will be honoring Rush by covering A Farewell to Kings in full every night before playing a full set of their own songs.

Primus opened for Rush on tour in 1992. In 2006, Claypool performed at Rush's Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame induction, and last year, Geddy Lee sat in with the Claypool Lennon Delirium in Toronto.

Rush drummer Neil Peart died earlier this year after a long battle with brain cancer.

The Rush tribute tour was earlier supposed to take place in the fall of 2019 but got postponed following Primus getting an offer to open for Slayer on the final leg of their U.S. trek.

"We were going to do it last fall and then this whole Slayer thing came up," Claypool explained in an interview with Rolling Stone. "We had been talking about doing something with Slayer on and off over the years, and then the opportunity to do the final-final [tour in 2019] and send these guys off was a pretty cool thing, so we postponed the Kings tour."

He added, "We're trying to be as sensitive as we possibly can, so it doesn't appear like we're just jumping on the, 'Hey, a superhero has died; let's go out and do a tribute to him' type thing."
