Colorado Marijuana Sales Exceed $2 Bln In Calendar Year 2020

Marijuana sales in Colorado exceeded $2 billion in calendar year 2020, even without including sales figures for the month of December.

According to data released by the Colorado Department of Revenue or CDOR, total marijuana sales for the period from January to November 2020 was $2.004 billion. In comparison, marijuana sales in the state for the entire calendar year 2019 was $1.75 billion.

In November 2020, medical marijuana sales in Colorado were $34.7 million, while retail marijuana sales were $140.5 million. However, these represented decreases from medical marijuana sales of $38.8 million and retail marijuana sales of $161.0 million in October 2020.

Sales of recreational use of marijuana started in Colorado in January 2014. Total cumulative sales from January 2014 to date totaled $9.79 billion.

In June 2019, CDOR said that Colorado surpassed $1 billion in tax revenue from marijuana sales, five years after the state began selling recreational marijuana.

Marijuana revenue supports state-wide efforts in Colorado, such as licensing and regulation of legal marijuana businesses, youth prevention efforts, behavioral health treatment, protecting public health and safety, and coordination across state agencies.
