Mariah Carey is set to be honored with the Innovator Award at the 12th annual African American Film Critics Association Awards.

Carey will receive the innovator award to recognize her creative role in her dozens of music videos and specials.

"Mariah Carey is often recognized as a global icon for her musical gifts, but rarely is she celebrated for the visual storytelling in her music videos and specials," said Gil Robertson, the association's CEO/president.

He added, "We're recognizing her as a creator. She has been very involved over the years in the creation, stories and storylines in her videos and we thought she deserved recognition."

The 12th annual AAFCA Awards will be presented virtually on April 7.

Other notable honorees at the ceremony include director George C. Wolfe for his work on the film adaptation of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

Past AAFCA special achievement honorees include Channing Dungey, Carl Reiner, Quincy Jones, Jason Blum, Edward James Olmos, George Lucas, Sidney Poitier, Jon Chu and Cicely Tyson, among others.
