The Chicks Reflect On Name Change, Performing With Beyoncé

In a new interview, The Chicks band members reflected on changing the all-female group's name and performing with Beyoncé in 2016.

The country-pop trio of Emily Robison, Natalie Maines and Martie Maguire, formerly known as The Dixie Chicks, officially changed their name to The Chicks last June amid the Black Lives Matter protest movement.

"With George Floyd's murder and everything that started happening with Black Lives Matter, we were like, 'Oh my God. We got to do this and do this as soon as possible," Maguire told Kelleigh Bannen in the new episode of Apple Music's "Essentials Radio."

The band had been under pressure to drop "Dixie" from its moniker as the word is a nostalgic nickname for the old American South.

"You didn't even know you were carrying that weight until it was gone," Maines said, referring to how freeing it was to change the name.

Reflecting on performing Beyoncé's "Daddy Lessons" alongside Queen Bey at the CMA Awards in 2016, Maines said, "Well, she's the biggest supporter of women, and then Texans. So I mean, we've always felt the kinship with her, for sure."
