Twenty One Pilots announced on Thursday that they will be releasing a new album, Scaled and Icy, on May 21, via Fueled By Ramen.

The band also released "Shy Away," the first single from the upcoming 11-track album, and an accompanying video directed by Miles & AJ on the same day.

Scaled and Icy is the duo's first album since their 2018 platinum-certified Trench. The album will be accompanied by the duo's first-ever global streaming event, "Twenty One Pilots - Livestream Experience," which will feature the live debuts of tracks from the record, according to a release.

Tyler Joseph wrote and produced Scaled and Icy, doing much of the work from his home over the past year due to the pandemic. Drummer Josh Dun is said to have engineered the drum tacks from across the country.

According to a press release, "Scaled and Icy is the product of long-distance virtual sessions and finds the duo processing their upended routines along with the prevailing emotions of 2020 - anxiety, loneliness, boredom, and doubt."

"The duo had to forgo their normal studio sessions, but reached a new of level of introspection in the process, adopting a more imaginative and bold approach to their songwriting," the release continued. "The result is a collection of songs that push forward through setbacks and focus on the possibilities worth remembering."
