Germany, Italy And U.K. Detect Omicron Cases

Germany, Italy and U.K. detected cases of the new Omicron Coronavirus variant on Saturday, according to several media reports.

The new variant was first reported from South Africa on 24th November, with early evidence suggesting it has a higher reinfection risk.

The World Health Organization or WHO classified?a new variant, B.1.1.529,?as a variant of Concern and?has?named?it?Omicron.

According to the U.S. CDC, no cases of the new variant have been identified in the U.S. as of Friday. The CDC is continuously monitoring variants and the U.S. variant surveillance system has reliably detected new variants in this country. It expects Omicron to be identified quickly, if it emerges in the U.S.

Several nations -- including the United States and the United Kingdom -- banned travel from South Africa and surrounding African countries.
