FDA Warns Cos. Selling Unsafe Skin Lightening Products

fda apr21 lt

The Food and Drug Administration has issued warning letters to twelve companies that sell over the counter (OTC) skin lightening products containing hydroquinone, the regulator said in a statement.

OTC products with active ingredient hydroquinone are unapproved and hence not considered to be safe, the warning letters explained.

The FDA alerted that it has received reports of serious side effects including skin rashes, facial swelling, and ochronosis-discoloration of skin, from the use of skin lightening products containing hydroquinone.

The FDA reminded consumers that there are no approved OTC skin lightening products, and advised not to use these as damage caused may be permanent as with the case of ochronosis.
