South Korean boy band BTS have announced that they are going on an indefinite "hiatus" to allow the band members to focus on solo projects.

The seven-member band, consisting of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, made the surprise announcement during BTS' Festa dinner, which is part of an annual celebration of their founding in 2013.

In a one-hour-long video posted to social media , Jungkook said, "We're each going to take some time to have fun and experience lots of things"

"We promise we will return someday, even more mature than we are now," he added.

In the video, the young Korean artists reflect on their nine-year successful journey together and discuss their future plans to temporarily go their separate ways.

"We're going on a hiatus now," Suga said.

"I think we should spend some time apart to learn how to be one again," added J-Hope. "I hope you don't see this as a negative thing, and see it as a healthy plan. I think BTS will become stronger that way."

J-Hope, Jungkook and Suga indicated plans for solo releases in the near future.
