UPSIDE Foods completed FDA's first pre-market consultation for human food made from cultured animal cells.
The pre-market consultation was to evaluate the production process and cultured cell material of UPSIDE's artificial food made from cultured animal cells.
While specifying that the voluntary pre-market consultation is not an approval process, FDA concluded that it has no further questions about the firm's safety conclusion.
UPSIDE Foods still needs a grant of inspection from the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS), before its meat substitute can be marketed.
In April 2022, UPSIDE raised $400 million in the series C funding round, at a valuation of $1 billion making it a unicorn.
