Two stoppage-time goals helped Iran secure a historic 2-0 victory over ten-man Wales in a Group B match in the Qatar World Cup on Friday.

Goals from Rouzbeh Chesmi and Ramin Rezaeian, in the 98th and 101st minute, respectively, rekindled the Asian team's hopes of survival in the tournament.

The result of their last group match against the United States will be crucial in the journey forward.

The victory marks the first time that Iran has beaten a European team at the World Cup.

Iran have never been past the first round of a World Cup.

Carlos Queiroz's side were deserving winners, having dominated large chunks of the match and comfortably creating the better of the chances even before the Welsh lost their goalkeeper to an 86th-minute red card.

Wayne Hennessey had been Wales' hero, producing a couple of outstanding saves as Iran piled on the pressure, until he was punished following a VAR review for charging from his goal and wiping out Iran's striker Mehdi Taremi.

In a group A match on Friday, Senegal defeated hosts Qatar 3-1.

Boulaye Dia (41st minute), Famara Diedhiou (48th minute), and Cheikh Dieng (84th minute) scored for the Africans, while Qatar's first goal in a World cup match was scored by Mohammed Muntari.
