Windtree Therapeutics (WINT), a biotechnology company focused on advancing innovative therapies, announced on Wednesday the issuance of a new patent in Japan for its oncology pipeline.
The patent covers the use of Windtree's aPKCi inhibitor in treating hedgehog pathway-dependent cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma, medulloblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and small cell lung cancer. The patent, number 7603605, will remain valid until 2040.
The aPKCi inhibitor is a novel, high-potency drug candidate being developed in both topical and oral formulations.
Windtree has partnered with Cancer Research UK and top academic research centers in advancing this asset. The patent also includes claims for combination therapies that use the aPKCi inhibitor alongside HDAC inhibitors to enhance anti-cancer effects.
The issuance of this patent marks a significant step in Windtree's strategy to expand its intellectual property portfolio. The company plans to continue its efforts in securing additional patent protections in key markets around the world.
Windtree's CEO, Jed Latkin, expressed the importance of this patent for the company's ongoing development and commercialization strategy in oncology.
Currently, WINT is trading at $0.22, down 10.48%.
