ASM International Slides to Loss in Q4; Scraps FY09 Dividend - Update

Wednesday, ASM International N.V. (ASMI), a provider of material for manufacturing of semi conductor devices, announced a swing to a net loss in the fourth quarter. Bookings for the quarter and year-end backlog were significantly down. The company also announced the cancellation of dividend for the full year 2009.

The Bilthoven, the Netherlands - based company reported a net loss of EUR 6.2 million, or EUR 0.12 per share, compared to net profit of EUR 19.1 million, or EUR 0.33 per share in the previous year.

Net sales for the quarter declined 36% to EUR 150.9 million year over year. Sequentially sales were down 21% from net sales of EUR 190 million.

ASM International noted that the bookings for the quarter were sequentially down 54% at EUR 80.9 million. Front-end segment bookings declined 20%, while back-end segment bookings fell 73%.

For the full Year, the company posted a net profit of EUR 18.4 million, or EUR 0.35 per share compared to EUR 61 million or EUR 1.06 per share in the previous year.

Net sales for the 12-month period were down 22% at EUR 747.4 million. Sales for the front-end segment declined 34% and back-end segment were down 11%. Year-end backlog declined 44% on a sequential manner.

ASMI is currently trading at 7.27 pence, down 0.66 pence or 8.31% on a volume of 61K shares.
