PriceSmart Says May Comparable Warehouse Sales Up 3.9% - Update

PriceSmart, Inc. (PSMT), an operator of membership shopping warehouse clubs, said Friday that its comparable warehouse sales in May increased 3.9% from the previous year and net sales grew 7.5% from the prior-year period.

Net sales for the month of May increased to $102 million from $94.9 million in the same month last year.

The San Diego, California-based company's comparable warehouse sales for the thirty-nine week period ended May 31 increased 11.6% from the same period a year ago.

For the nine months ended May 31, 2009, net sales increased 14.2% to $926.3 million from $811.4 million in the comparable period last year.

According to the company, 26 warehouse clubs were in operation at the end of May, compared to 25 warehouse clubs in the year-ago period.

PriceSmart said that its warehouse clubs sell perishable foods and basic consumer goods to individuals and businesses. The warehouse clubs also offers various ancillary services that include food services, bakery, tire centers and photo centers, the company noted.

PSMT closed Thursday's regular trading at $18.25 on the Nasdaq.
