Govt. Likely To Consider Listing BSNL

The government is considering to list the shares of public sector telecom major on the bourses, even while anticipating stiff opposition from employee unions, reports PTI.

The efforts of the government and the management of the telecom major were in vain, though the government came out with attractive employee stock option plans. According to a senior government official, BSNL is likely to be listed first and then divestment may be opted.

BSNL's value is projected at about $100 billion and has a capital of about Rs.5,000 crore. Its net profit and revenue for this fiscal declined significantly to Rs.574 crore from Rs.3,000 crore and Rs.36,000 crore from Rs.38,000 crore in the previous year.

The lower average revenue per user (ARPU) compared with the private operators is the main reason for the fall, it is said. The company's long-term plans might suffer if the situation continues.
