Tropical Storm Mirinae, which entered Vietnam after hitting the Philippines with typhoon strength over the week-end, unleashed severe flooding in the central parts of the country, killing 23 people and stranding families on rooftops.
Local media reported that several towns in Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai and Khanh Hoa provinces had been submerged by overflowing rivers, with streets entrenched in water.
Several villages remained cut-off as they were inundated by the worst flooding in four decades.
Phu Yen was the worst-hit, where 15 deaths were reported.
More than 150 houses were destroyed, while roofs of several schools and health centers blown away in strong winds.
Reports quoting officials said 27 fishing boats were sunk at ports.
Large swaths of rice and vegetable farms were destroyed or flooded.
Thirty-four flights operating in the central region were canceled Monday, according to Vietnam Airlines.
Disaster officials fear that the death toll will rise.
