Biorem Inc. (BRM.V), a supplier of air pollution control systems, reported a profit for the third quarter that more than tripled from last year, aided by a 20% increase in revenues. On a per share basis, earnings quadrupled from the year-ago period.
Third-Quarter Results
For the third quarter, Guelph, Ontario-based Biorem's net income rose to C$520 thousand or C$0.04 per share from C$144 thousand or C$0.01 per share in the prior-year quarter.
Revenues for the quarter increased 20% to C$4.91 million from C$4.11 million in the year-ago period.
Peer Performance
Last week, PMFG Inc. (PMFG), a provider of custom engineered systems and products, reported a wider net loss for the first quarter, impacted by losses related to extinguishment of debt and change in fair value of derivative liability. Adjusted earnings per share declined from the prior year.
The Dallas, Texas-based company's first quarter net loss attributable to share holders widened to US$2.14 million or US$0.16 per share from US$0.67 million or US$0.05 per share for the same period last year. Quarterly revenues slipped to US$31.33 million from US$43.66 million last year.

Biorem's gross profit for the third quarter was C$2.35 million, up 34% from C$1.75 million in the same period last year.
New orders for the quarter totaled C$4.59 million, resulting in a current order backlog of C$10.4 million. The backlog is down 21% from September 31, 2008 and down 7% from C$5.2 million in the preceding second quarter.
As at September 30, 2009, Biorem had working capital of C$7.25 million, including cash and short-term investments of C$2.93 million, trade and other receivables of C$3.42 million and unbilled revenue of C$3.28 million. This compares to total working capital of C$6.94 million, cash and short-term investments of C$2.20 million, trade and other receivables of C$5.42 million and unbilled revenue of C$3.81 million as at December 31, 2008.
Year-To-Date Results
For the nine-month period, Biorem's net loss narrowed to C$143 thousand or C$0.01 per share from C$622 thousand or C$0.05 per share in the same period last year.
Revenue for the nine months were C$14.63 million, up 50% from C$9.76 million in the year-ago period.
