A new Gallup poll released Friday revealed that Americans predict they will spend an average of $743 on Christmas gifts.
The number represents a significant increase in Americans' predicted spending from December 2008, when Americans predicted they would spend $639 on gifts.
It also represents an increase from the November poll, in which Americans predicted spending $638 on gifts, and is even above the $740 Americans predicted they would spend in the October poll.
The poll further found that 29% of Americans plan to spend $1,000 or more, while 24% said they plan to spend between $500 and $999. Another 14% said they expected to spend between $250 and $499, while 16% said they plan to spend between $100 and $249. The remaining 4% said they would spend under $100.
Meanwhile, the poll found that 47% of Americans said they plan to spend around the same amount for this Christmas as they did last year. Another 42% said they would spend less, while 10% said they would spend more.
