A new Gallup poll released Wednesday showed that Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana rank as the most conservative states.
According to the poll, which surveyed around 300,000 Americans during 2009, found that 49.4% of residents in Alabama self-identify as politically conservative. In Mississippi, 48.3% said they are conservative, while in Louisiana, 47.5% identify as conservative.
Meanwhile, Washington, D.C. ranked as the most liberal, with 36.3% of residents self-identifying as liberal. In Massachusetts, 29% said they are liberal, while 28% said they are liberal in Vermont.
The poll also found that in all 50 states, those self-identifying as conservative outnumbered those identifying as liberal. Only in Washington, D.C. did those self-identifying as liberal outnumber those identifying as conservative.
Nationwide, the poll found that conservatives outnumbered liberals by nearly 2 to 1, 40% to 21%. Another 36% self-identified as moderate.
