Japan stocks are poised for a lower open on Tuesday, with ongoing concerns about Toyota and a negative lead from Wall Street weighing on the market.
Tokyo shares were broadly lower on Monday.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average fell 105.27 points or 1.05 percent to close at 9,951.82.
Among the Nikkei component stocks, there were 44 closing higher, 168 were lower and 13 were unchanged.
The broader TOPIX index was down 8.77 or 0.98 percent at 883.01.
Trading volume was 1.99 billion shares.
Shares of Toyota were down 35 yen or 1.06 percent as the company dealt with continuing recall and quality control issues. Elsewhere in the auto sector, Honda was down 65 yen or 2.10 percent, Mazda was down 6 yen or 2.58 percent and Nissan was down 19 yen or 2.59 percent
Consumer electronics giant Sony's shares fell 112 points or 3.63 percent on concerns over European debt issues.
Fellow electronics maker Panasonic was down 74 yen or 5.32 percent after reported an expected loss in its TV section. Casio shares fell 35 yen or 5.30 percent after reporting worsening full year net loss figures.
Beverage maker Kirin Holdings declined 106 yen or 7.35 percent on word that merger talks with Suntory Holdings were terminated.
In overseas trading, U.S. markets drifted lower on Monday on continued concern over European credit issues. About 10 minutes before the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 51.46 points or 0.51 percent at 9,960.77, the Nasdaq Composite index was down 5.53 points or 0.26 percent at 2,135.59 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 4.13 points or 0.39 percent at 1,062.06.
Most of the other major Asia/Pacific region markets closed lower on Monday.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was down 114.19 points or 0.58 percent at 19,550.89.
The Shanghai Composite Index in China was down 4.23 points or 0.14 percent at 2,935.17.
India's SENSEX/BSE 30 index managed a gain of 19.96 points or 0.13 percent to close at 15,935.61.
In Indonesia, the Jakarta Composite index was down 43.40 points or 1.72 percent at 2,475.57.
South Korea's KOSPI/Seoul Composite index was down 14.33 points or 0.91 percent at 1,552.79.
The Taiwan Weighted Index was up 3.01 points or 0.04 percent at 7,215.88.
