P&G Recalls Two Flavors Of Pringles Snacks For Potential Salmonella Exposure - Update

Consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble Co. (PG) announced Monday a voluntary recall for two flavors of Pringles Snacks in the U.S., in response to Food & Drug Administration or FDA Industry Guidance for protection of consumers from potential Salmonella exposure. However, the company confirmed that there have been no reports of Salmonella-related illness in relation to these products.

In a statement, the company said, "The safety of our products is P&G's top priority, and we follow rigorous food safety and ingredient testing standards. We are withdrawing these products out of an abundance of caution for consumer safety and in response to FDA's recommendation to the food industry."

The company noted that it was notified by one of its suppliers that a seasoning used in these two recalled products contains hydrolyzed vegetable protein or HVP, manufactured by Basic Food Flavors, Inc., which could lead to potential salmonella exposure. Salmonella is a common food borne pathogen that can cause severe illnesses, including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.

Meanwhile, the FDA also recommended that food manufacturers recall certain types of products containing HVP manufactured by Basic Food Flavors, and P&G is complying with this guidance.

The recall is based on the recommendation from the FDA to the food industry, and is for Pringles Restaurant Cravers Cheeseburger potato crisps as well as Pringles Family Faves Taco Night potato crisps. The company revealed that Pringles Restaurant Cravers Cheeseburger potato crisps with UPC Code 37000 26936, and 'Best by' dates as 02/2011 and 04/2011 as well as Pringles Family Faves Taco Night potato crisps with UPC Code 37000 26773, and 'Best by' dates as 03/2011, 4/2011, and 05/2011, are the product batches being recalled.

Meanwhile, the company added that no other Pringles varieties or flavors are affected by this recall, and that the affected products have not been shipped to retailers outside of the U.S.

PG closed Monday's regular trading session at $63.19, down $0.50 or 0.79% on a volume of 11.29 million shares.
