The number of unemployed in Spain increased 1.5% month-on-month in August to 3.97 million, data from the Labor Ministry showed Thursday.
Compared to July, the number of unemployed persons increased by 61,083. Unemployment recorded an increase of 340,581 persons or 9.3% from August last year.
Unemployment in services rose 1.7% month-on-month and in construction, unemployment was 1.8% higher than in July. In industry, the number of unemployed increased 1.9% on a monthly basis.
Unemployment among males climbed 1.8% from the previous month and among females, unemployment was 1.3% higher than in July. Year-on-year, male unemployment was up 8.4% and female unemployment increased 10.3%.
Spain has the highest unemployment rate in the euro area, at 20.09% in the second quarter. The Euro area jobless rate was 10% in July, the largest since August 1998.
