Dark Chocolate Shows Greater Health Benefits Than White Chocolate

A new study released Wednesday by researchers at San Diego State University suggests that dark chocolate holds a significant health edge over white chocolate. For the study the researchers examined 31 subjects, giving them either white or dark chocolate for 15 days.

Over the course of the trial they tested the cholesterol levels, blood pressure and blood sugar levels of each subject. By the end of the study, they found that those who ate the dark chocolate had lower blood sugar levels, more "good cholesterol" and less "bad cholesterol" and lower blood pressure.

According to the researchers the key is an increased level of flavanoids found in dark chocolate that is not present in white chocolate. Not surprisingly, the researchers also said it was not difficult to find participants.

"Compliance with our study subjects were great because everybody wanted to eat chocolate," the researchers said. "We actually had to tell them not to eat more than 50 grams a day."
