Foster Farms Recalls Turkey Burger Due To Undeclared Allergen

California-based Foster Farms is recalling about 15,040 pounds of a turkey burger product because of mis-branding and an undeclared allergen.

The company said the product contains a seasoning mix with hydrolyzed soy protein - a known allergen not declared on the label.

The product being recalled include: 10-lb. cases containing 30 5.33-oz. "Foster Farms, Ready to Cook, Boneless Mediterranean Style White Turkey Burgers" with the case code "96384.

The product has the following Julian dates: "1362," "2027," "2033," "2039," "2040," "2046," "2054," "2125," "2129," "2130" and "2131.

The production date of the product was between December 28, 2011, and May 10, 2012, and was sold for institutional use in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

The problem was discovered during a routine label review by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The problem occurred as a result of the company receiving a spice mix from its supplier after an ingredient reformulation request by the company to have the hydrolyzed soy ingredient removed. The reformulation included soy, which was not declared on the turkey burger label.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service and the company have not received any reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the products.

Soy allergy is a type of food allergy and is a hypersensitivity to dietary substances from soy causing an overreaction of the immune system. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates soy is among the nine most common food allergens for pediatric and adult food allergy patients.

The most common symptoms of soy protein allergy are nausea, cramping, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, floating stools, loose stools and foul-smelling stools. The most severe food allergy reaction is called anaphylaxis and is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention and treatment with Epinephrine.
