A vast majority of Americans believe that God had a hand in the development of humans in some way, according to the results of a Gallup poll released Friday.
The poll revealed that 46 percent of Americans believe in the creationist view that God created humans in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years.
In other words, 46 percent of Americans hold the view that Adam and Eve were the first humans created by God.
An additional 32 percent hold a "theistic" view that humans evolved under God's guidance. Adding the 32 percent who identify as "theistic" to the 46 percent who identify as "creationist," the poll found that 78 percent of Americans hold a view involving God in the development of human in some way.
The 46 percent was up from a previous poll taken in 2011, which found that only 40 percent of Americans identified themselves as "creationists." However, the 2011 poll was down from 46 percent in 2006.
Overall, the number of Americans identifying as "creationist" has ebbed and flowed over 30 years but remains buoyant and mostly unchanged.
Just fifteen percent of Americans believe humans evolved with no guidance or input from God at all.
Looking at other factors at play in the poll, Gallup said 42 percent of Americans with a postgraduate education said God was involved in the evolution of humans. However, a plurality of those with less than a postgraduate have a creationist viewpoint
Politically, 89 percent of Republicans believe God was involved in the process of human development, including 58 percent that identified as "creationists."
Meanwhile, 73 percent of Democrats held a view involving God in the process of human development, with 41 percent identifying as "creationists."
Gallup said, "All in all, there is no evidence in this trend of a substantial movement toward a secular viewpoint on human origins."
