Japan's Deputy Vice-Finance Minister Naoko Ishii has been appointed CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility, a World Bank funding agency.
The agency having more than 180 countries as its members supports efforts to protect the environment in developing countries and address climate change. It is also authorized to distribute funds to environmental projects.
After joining the Finance Ministry in 1981, Ishii had also served as an economist with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and as the World Bank's Country Director for Sri Lanka and Maldives, Japanese media reported on Friday.
The Japanese government had recommended her for the post.
