Brazil Jobless Rate Drops For Second Month

Unemployment in Brazil decreased for the second consecutive month in May, data released by statistical office IBGE showed Thursday.

The unemployment rate dropped to 5.8 percent in May from 6 percent in April. In March, the jobless rate was 6.2 percent. Economists were looking for a jobless rate of 6 percent.

The number of jobless persons in the country remained broadly unchanged at around 1.4 million in May. Compared to May 2011, the number of unemployed decreased by 7.1 percent.

At the same time, the number of employed persons increased 1.2 percent sequentially to about 23 million in May. Year-on-year, employment rose 2.5 percent, data showed.
