Japan's housing starts grew at a slower pace of 4.2 percent year-on-year in May, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism reported Friday.
This was slower than an expected 6.6 percent expansion and follows April's 10.3 percent growth.
In May, annualized housing starts totaled 903,000, the highest level since last February. The number of housing starts rose from 896,000 a month ago.
Construction orders received by big 50 contractors dipped 0.9 percent annually, reversing the 16.2 percent growth seen in April.
